EV Charger Installation in Hervey Bay, a plain English guide for homeowners
If you have just bought, or are about to buy, an electric vehicle, this page is the short version of every question we get asked when a Hervey Bay homeowner rings up about a charger.
We will cover three things: what is actually involved in a home install, what it costs in Hervey Bay, and which charger is right for your home. If you want to skip to the quote, the number is (07) 4183 7754.

What is actually involved
An EV charger is not the same as a power point. It is a dedicated circuit running from your switchboard to the charger location, sized correctly for the charger you choose, protected by the right safety devices, and connected with Ergon Energy’s permission. The job has five parts.
One: site assessment. We come to your home, look at your switchboard, work out where the charger will mount, measure the cable run, check what spare capacity the switchboard has, and ask you about your usual driving and charging pattern. Most assessments take 30 to 45 minutes. We do not charge for this if it leads to a quote.
Two: switchboard check. If your switchboard is ten or more years old, has ceramic fuses, or is already full, you may need a switchboard upgrade before the charger can be installed. We will tell you straight away if that is the case, and what it would cost.
Three: the Ergon side. Every 7 kW home charger in Hervey Bay needs an Ergon management device in the meter box. The rule works off the charger’s nameplate rating, so a 7 kW unit turned down in software still needs the device. Ergon supplies and fits it at no charge, on your normal tariff (Tariff 11) or a cheaper economy tariff (Tariff 33). We wire the meter panel ready, lodge the Electrical Work Request with Ergon Energy (our local network, not Energex, which only covers South East Queensland), and Ergon books the device install. You never deal with the paperwork.
Four: install. Charger mounted, cable run, dedicated circuit installed, RCBO protection fitted, charger commissioned and tested. A standard install in a typical Hervey Bay home is a half to full day’s work for two people, depending on cable run length and switchboard access.
Five: handover. We show you how the charger works, set up the app on your phone, and leave you with documentation including the Electrical Safety Certificate, the manufacturer’s warranty paperwork, and the Ergon connection confirmation.
What it costs in Hervey Bay
Every home is different, so we give you a fixed price after a quick site visit rather than a guess over the phone. Three things drive the cost: which charger you choose, how far the cable has to run from your switchboard to the charger, and whether your switchboard has spare capacity or needs an upgrade first.
We will look at all three on site, explain what your install needs and why, then quote one clear price for the whole job, including the Ergon side. No surprises, and nothing starts until you have said yes to the price.
Which charger is right for you
The right charger depends on three things: your car, your power supply, and your solar setup.
Your car. If you drive a Tesla, the Tesla Wall Connector is the easiest fit. For everything else (Polestar, BYD, Hyundai, Kia, MG, Volvo, BMW, the rest), pick a charger that suits how you want to manage charging, not the badge on your car.
Your power supply. Most Hervey Bay homes are single phase. A single phase 7kW charger will fully charge a typical EV overnight from empty, which is more than enough for almost every driver. Some homes have three-phase power, which can support a faster charger, but the charger is rarely the limit. Your car’s on-board charger sets how fast it takes AC power, and most EVs top out around 11 kW even on three-phase, with only a few taking 22 kW. For almost every driver a single-phase 7 kW charger fills the car overnight with room to spare, and public DC fast chargers cover the rare quick top-up on a road trip.
Your solar setup. If you have solar panels and want to charge your car for free from surplus solar during the day, the Zappi is the one we lean to for getting the most out of your solar. It has three modes: Fast (grid power, fastest charge), Eco (uses a blend of solar and grid to maintain a minimum charge rate), and Eco+ (uses only surplus solar, fully free charging, but slower). It is what we install when a customer wants to make the most of their solar.
If you do not have solar yet, any of the three chargers above will work. The Tesla and Ocular are simpler. The Zappi is the more future-proof choice if you might add solar later.
What the regulations require in Queensland
Three rules sit behind every legal EV charger install in Hervey Bay.
AS/NZS 3000:2018 (the Australian wiring rules). The charger circuit must be on a dedicated final sub-circuit, protected by an appropriately rated Type A or Type B RCBO depending on the charger’s leakage protection, and sized to handle continuous load.
Ergon Energy’s Queensland Electricity Connection Manual (QECM). On a single-phase home, any charger with a nameplate rating above 20 amps must have Ergon active device management, and the assessment is on the nameplate, not on a software setting. That covers every 7 kW charger we install. Three-phase chargers at 32 amps per phase sit under the higher three-phase limit and need no device. We check what your address supports before quoting.
The Electrical Safety Act 2002 (Queensland). The work must be carried out by a licensed electrical worker. EV chargers are not a DIY job in Queensland, even at lower currents.

FAQs
How long does an EV charger install take? A standard 7kW single phase install in a typical Hervey Bay home is a half day to a full day. Three phase installs and longer cable runs take longer. We always give a clear timing commitment in the quote.
Do I need Ergon Energy’s approval? Yes. Every 7 kW single-phase charger needs the Ergon network device, judged on the charger’s nameplate rating. We lodge the Electrical Work Request as part of the job and Ergon fits the device at no charge.
Can the charger be installed outside? Yes. The chargers we install are rated IP54 or higher for outdoor mounting. We will pick a location that is shaded where possible, secure from accidental impact, and within reasonable cable reach of your typical parking position.
Will my solar charge the car automatically? With a Zappi or an Ocular IQ, yes. Both watch your solar through a CT clamp and can charge from surplus solar automatically. The Tesla Wall Connector has no built-in solar diversion; Tesla owners with a Powerwall get it via the Tesla app’s Charge on Solar feature.
How much does it cost to actually charge the car? At the Ergon Energy general residential rate (Tariff 11), a full charge from empty to 80 percent on a typical 60 kWh battery costs about $16. On solar excess via a Zappi, the same charge can cost nothing. Off-peak tariffs (Tariff 33) bring grid charging down to about $9 per full charge.
Do you install chargers in apartments and townhouses? Yes, but the rules are different. Body corporate approval and shared meter arrangements often need to be worked through first.
Can I bring my own charger and just pay for the install? Yes. We do BYO charger installs as well. The quote will exclude the hardware cost and include the rest of the work.
